Per app, per day, per trip
How much data for Vietnam?
Vietnam uses less mobile data than almost anywhere, because the wifi is everywhere and free. Then Grab reloads the map forty times a day. Here are the real numbers.

How many GB for how many days with the assumptions printed
| Trip style | 5 days | 10 days | 14 days | 21 days | 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maps, Zalo, WhatsApp, booking Grabs | 1GB | 2GB | 3GB | 4.5GB | 6GB |
| Plus photos, stories, some video | 3.5GB | 7GB | 10GB | 15GB | 20GB |
| Plus laptop hotspot and calls | 8GB | 16GB | 22GB | 34GB | 48GB |
| Cheapest plan that fits | GigSky 5GB $10.29 | GigSky 10GB $16.79 | Yesim 20GB $25.58 | Yesim 30GB $32.56 | Airalo 50GB $49.00 |
Assumes wifi at your accommodation every night, offline maps downloaded before you leave each city, no video streaming over cellular, and photos backing up on wifi rather than automatically. The bottom row picks the cheapest plan that covers the heaviest row for that duration, from our comparison of six providers, checked September 4, 2026.
Two things push these numbers around more than anything else, and they pull in opposite directions.
Down: Vietnamese wifi. Every cafe, every hotel, most restaurants, many buses and a surprising number of street stalls have working free wifi and will give you the password without being asked. You will spend far more of the day on wifi than you expect.
Up: Grab. Ride-hailing redraws the map continuously while you wait and while you ride, and in a country where you might take four Grabs a day, that is a real line item rather than a rounding error.
What each app actually costs you per hour, on cellular
| What you are doing | Roughly | Notes for Vietnam specifically |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps, navigating | 5–10MB/hr | Download the offline map for each region before you travel and this drops close to zero. |
| Grab, waiting and riding | 15–25MB/trip | Higher than a normal map session because it re-renders the driver position constantly. Four trips a day is roughly 100MB. |
| Zalo and WhatsApp, text | under 5MB/day | Negligible. Voice notes and photos are what move the number. |
| Instagram or TikTok, scrolling | 300–600MB/hr | The single biggest consumer on most trips, by a wide margin. |
| Uploading a photo | 3–5MB each | A 40-photo day pushed to the cloud on cellular is 150MB or so. |
| Uploading a one-minute reel | 40–80MB | Do this on cafe wifi and your whole trip fits in 5GB. |
| Video call over WhatsApp or Zalo | 150–250MB/hr | Fine occasionally, expensive as a daily habit. |
| Netflix or YouTube, standard definition | 0.7–1GB/hr | The reason the third row of the table above exists. |
| Laptop on hotspot, working | 1.5–2.5GB/day | Email, docs, a couple of calls. Add streaming and it doubles. |
Figures are typical ranges from app publisher documentation and metered testing, not measurements taken in Vietnam. Your numbers will vary with video quality settings more than with anything else. How we test.
Three real trips, three plans what we would actually buy
Ten days, Hanoi to Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City
Trains and flights between cities, Grab everywhere within them, photos posted most evenings from the hotel wifi. Maps downloaded offline before each leg.
Realistic usage: 6 to 8GB. Buy GigSky 10GB for $16.79, or Saily's 10GB at $17.99 if the support record matters to you. 5GB is cutting it close if you post from the street.
Two weeks including the Ha Giang loop
A week of cities, then five days on a motorbike in the far north where the data question becomes a coverage question instead.
Realistic usage: 8 to 10GB, of which almost none in the mountains, because there is often no signal to use it on. Buy a 10GB travel plan plus a Viettel eSIM for about $5. Size is not your problem up there, network is.
A month working from Da Nang
Cafes by day, apartment by night, laptop on hotspot whenever the building wifi drops, which is most evenings after 21:00.
Realistic usage: 35 to 50GB. Buy Airalo 50GB for $49.00, which at 98 cents a gigabyte is the cheapest large bundle we found. An unlimited plan for the same month costs $69.00 and caps you at 3GB a day.
Five days, resort in Phu Quoc
Airport, hotel, boat trip, beach. Strong resort wifi, one or two Grabs, everything else on wifi.
Realistic usage: under 1GB. Buy Yesim 1GB for $2.91 or take GigSky's free 100MB for seven days and see whether you need anything else at all.
The two sizes that cover most Vietnam trips: GigSky 5GB at $10.29 for a week and 10GB at $16.79 for a fortnight. Above 20GB, Airalo's 50GB at $49.00 is the best price per gigabyte on this site.
See GigSky plans See Airalo plans Compare all six providersWhy Vietnam needs less data than you think the wifi is the story
Most destination data guides are written as though the traveler is on cellular from breakfast to bed. In Vietnam that is simply not what happens.
Free wifi is close to universal and nobody guards it. Cafes hand over the password with the coffee. Hotels at every price point have it and it usually works. Long-distance buses and many trains advertise it. Restaurants print the password on the menu.
What this means in practice: back up photos, upload reels, download offline maps, sync your podcast queue and take video calls on wifi, and your cellular consumption collapses to navigation, messaging and Grab. That is the difference between the first and second rows of the table at the top of this page, and it is worth about ten dollars a fortnight.
Questions on data usage in Vietnam
How many GB do I need for 10 days in Vietnam?
About 2GB for maps, messaging and Grab; about 7GB if you also post photos and stories; about 16GB if you hotspot a laptop. GigSky's 10GB at $16.79 covers the middle case with room to spare, and its 5GB at $10.29 covers the first case comfortably.
How much data does Grab use?
Roughly 15 to 25MB per trip, counting the wait and the ride, because the map re-renders continuously to track the driver. Four trips a day is around 100MB, which is more than most people budget for and still small next to one hour of Instagram.
Is 5GB enough for Vietnam?
For a week, yes, for most people: navigation, messaging, ride-hailing and a moderate amount of social use. For two weeks it is tight unless you are disciplined about doing uploads on wifi. For anything involving a laptop it is not close.
Do I need data at all in Vietnam?
Yes, for Grab and for maps, and both of those are the difference between a trip that flows and a trip spent standing on corners. Beyond that, the free wifi genuinely does cover a lot, which is why the plans people need here are smaller than the plans they buy.
Does Zalo use a lot of data?
No. Text messaging on Zalo and WhatsApp is under 5MB a day for most people. Voice notes, photos and video calls are what move the figure, and a one-hour video call is roughly 150 to 250MB.
Should I buy a bigger plan just in case?
Usually not. The gap between 5GB and 10GB is about six dollars, so the insurance is cheap, but the gap between a 10GB fixed plan and an unlimited plan is thirty dollars for capacity almost nobody uses. We work through that comparison here.
Most Vietnam trips fit in 10GB
GigSky sells 10GB for $16.79 over 30 days, the cheapest at that size in our comparison, and gives away 100MB for a week so you can check the signal at your hotel before spending anything.
